Singe-Issue EPD

The International EPD® System allows for the possibility to adapt the information given to specific user needs and market applications by introducing the concept of “single-issue EPDs”, focusing on a single enviornmental impact category.

The most popular such single-issue EPD® has been the Climate Declaration, which declares only the carbon footprint of the product, while referring to the EPD® for more information about other impacts.

Climate Declarations and EPD®

A single-issue EPD®, such as a Climate Declarations, can only be published if a full EPD® is registered or if the correspondent information is available on request. Information on where to find additional information shall be included in the single-issue EPD®.

Example of a Climate Declaration

Content of a Climate Declaration

A Climate Declaration describes the emissions of greenhouse gases, expressed as carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalents for a product's life cycle. This indicator is often referred to as a "carbon footprint". It is based on verified results from life cycle assessment (LCA) based information in accordance with ISO 14025.

A single issue EPD® shall give information on how to obtain information on the full environmental impact from the declared product. Single issue EPDs shall also include the following statement: “This single issue EPD® only addresses one impact category and does not assess other potential social, economic and environmental impacts arising from the provision of this product.”

Creating a Climate Declaration

Climate Declarations shall follow the same rules for development as the EPD process:

  • Find or create relevant PCR document for the product category
  • Perform LCA study based on PCR
  • Compiling environmental information into the EPD® reporting format
  • Verification and certification
  • Registration and publication

When an EPD® is registered, a Climate Declaration document may be created by the Secretariat upon request in the registration form. This may be subject to a fee. Climate Declaration be based on will include the information about the product and company and the Global Warming Potential indicator from the EPD®.

More information about single-issue EPD®s and Climate Declarations are available in the General Programme Instructions.
